PAE microgrids provide secure, clean and lower-cost energy to communities and provide a new recurring source of revenue for property developers e.g. Operators of retirement/aged care villages, land developers of new residential or commercial estates and potentially local governments.
A microgrid will enhance demand for property because within the microgrid customers will enjoy clean and lower cost energy. The opportunity also exists for the developer to own the infrastructure and generate a new recurring revenue stream.
A microgrid is an embedded private distribution network that can be islanded or grid connected. It has its own local power generation, energy storage and energy consumers. When connected to the grid it can significantly reduce the headworks cost otherwise required to obtain power from the grid. Microgrids can also intelligently supply energy and electrical services to the grid and source low cost off-peak power from the grid for delivery to consumers during peak cost periods.
A microgrid is therefore a win-win-win: for developers, grid operators and consumers. Microgrids provide triple bottom line benefits: economic, social and environmental benefits.
Technology
Microgrids have a number of power generation configurations, however solar PV and battery storage will be a constant in either a distributed (e.g. roof-top) or centralised (common area ground-mount) arrangement. Solar and battery storage may also be supplemented with gas using tri-generation (combined heat, power and cooling).
The energy generated will be supplied to the community and intelligently distributed to users or stored in the microgrid battery for evening and night power. The battery is also charged overnight from the grid to provide early morning energy prior to optimal PV system operation during peak energy pricing times (8am onwards).
Scalable
The microgrid is inherently modular and as such can be rolled out in a staged development to meet the energy requirements of the site as it grows and demand increases. This minimises the unnecessary upfront expenditure that may be required for a grid connected development.
Commercial arrangements
PAE provides a turn-key EPCM solution: Design, supply, construct and operation of the microgrid.
Commercially, we provide the EPCM as either:
- A contractor
- Microgrid co-developer and JV owner with property developers or
- Independent developer and owner with a Build/Own/Operate/Transfer (BOOT) option
