Like many industries solar has had, and continues to be at risk of companies who act without integrity and poor behaviour. While the bar was initially lifted in regards to installers and products, the retail part of the sector has needed a lot of work to ensure that consumers are being well treated when purchasing a solar system. The sheer number of solar companies cold calling and door knocking to sell solar makes the purchase confusing and often too hard.
The Clean Energy Council (CEC), the industry national body, established its Solar Retailer Code of Conduct following extensive consultation and an arduous authorisation process with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
The application process to become a new CEC Approved Solar Retailer is unmercifully rigorous. There is now consequently an increasing number of purchasing programs and local and state government initiatives that require solar companies to be Approved Solar Retailers.
A recent independent review of the Solar Retailer Code of Conduct concluded that it provides customer protections that add substantially to the legislative framework and that the CEC’s administration of the Code is effective, with a rigorous review process required before companies are accepted as signatories.
Perdaman Advanced Energy were one of the first solar companies to be independently assessed, stress tested and approved under this process and are reviewed and reaccredited annually.
